I have long thought God to be a “chicken or fish” kind of person. I have however discovered, and am discovering, that He is more of a “buffet” kind of Father. Let me explain.
I believe our realm of choice, is inextricably linked to our realm of possibility. And so, what we choose, or more importantly, what we don’t choose relates to how we view God and His character. Have a look at Luke 15:22-23: 22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring[b] out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on hisfeet. 23 And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry”.
We all know the story of the Prodigal Son – a son comes home after squandering all his father had given him. The verses above, describe the father’s response upon his son’s return. I love this part of the story. I count that the word “AND” is used 6 times in these two verses! 6 times! And, the word or, was not used once. How’s that for choice? And, and, and, and…. I am not suggesting that we are not given choice, or that God does not, at times, put us before a choice. It is just that if we glimpse the scope of Him and His creation, we will view the possibilities for our life in a whole new way.
The truth is that God is too big, too creative and too generous, to limit you to just one gift, one blessing, one option. He has invested too much in you when He created you in His image, to have you locked into just one possibility or one option. Limiting yourself, is limiting Him. He wants to display all His glory, through every aspect of your life.
Before you make that next big decision, remind yourself that you serve a Father who is not the God of “or”, but the God of “and”.
